Killara Adult Day Care & Respite Centre

Killara Building, Northam

What is Respite Care?

Respite care is a service that allows someone else to take over the caregiving duties temporarily, giving primary carers a much-needed break. This organised, short-term relief can last for a few hours or several days, offering significant benefits for both the carer and the person receiving care.

Benefits for Carers:

  • Physical and Emotional Rest: Carers often experience fatigue and stress. Taking a break helps them recharge and continue providing quality care.
  • Improved Well-being: Regular breaks can enhance carers' overall health and well-being, making them more effective in their role.

Benefits for Those Receiving Care:

  • New Experiences: Respite care provides opportunities for individuals to engage in different activities, meet new people, and enjoy a change of scenery.
  • Enhanced Social Interaction: It can be particularly beneficial for all older Australians as it offers them a chance to socialise and have fun in a safe environment.

When might I need to use Respite Care?

Carers might use respite care to go on holiday, handle daily activities, or simply relax. Signs you need a break include:

  • Constant fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Irritability
  • Loss of interest in activities
  • Frequent arguments

Respite care can be regular or occasional and sometimes needed in emergencies if the carer is sick or hospitalised.

About Us

Killara is an Adult Day and Respite centre proudly sponsored by the Shire of Northam and funded by the Commonwealth Home support Programme. Killara plays a vital role in supporting carers within the community and Wheatbelt. Killara serves as a bridge between home care and more intensive clinical settings, providing essential services that ease the burden on carers while enhancing the quality of life for older adults aged 65 years and over or 50 years and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

Respite services are specifically designed for carers. However, Social Support Group, Social Support Individual, and Transport services can be accessed by anyone in our service areas, as long as they meet our criteria.

Our Services

Killara Adult Day & Respite centre offers a range of supportive services that include social engagement, personal care assistance, and respite for carers. By creating a welcoming environment where older adults can participate in meaningful activities, enjoy social interaction, and receive basic care, Killara Adult Day & Respite centre helps to alleviate the day-to-day pressures faced by family and community carers.

Moreover, Killara offers carers peace of mind, knowing that their loved ones are in a safe, supportive environment. This enables carers to take necessary breaks, attend to personal matters, or simply rest, ultimately helping to prevent burnout and maintain their own well-being.

Our personalised approach means we can design a care plan that takes into account the client’s needs. Some clients come daily or weekly and some clients may prefer to only attend the special interest groups.
